The wrestling competition organised by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to promote sports is facing problems aplenty with almost all the political parties proposing locations of their choice across the city to host the event. The event interests all as around Rs 1 crore is spent in two days to organise the event.

The ruling NCP is battling issues within the party as a faction wants the event to be re-organised at Warje while others are demanding it be organised at Kharadi.

The Congress had earlier jumped into the fray by demanding the event be hosted at Shivaji stadium as it is a civic facility and is in the heart of the city. With differences on the location, the sports committee had postponed the decision on shortlisting the venue till next meeting scheduled for Wednesday.

In agreement with the Congress, the MNS has also proposed to host the event at Shivaji stadium while the BJP wants it be held at S P College sports ground. “The event should be organised in different parts of the city. It should be organised in Sadashiv Peth as the ground here is huge. This will enable hordes of sports lovers to witness the event,” read a proposal submitted by BJP corporator Dhananjay Jadhav. The civic body is likely to witness political slugfest with Congress and MNS joining hands on the issue. The NCP will have to convince Congress to support the location of their choice or seek help from Shiv Sena, which has not declared their stand on the issue.

Last year, the event had made headlines for extravagant spending.
