A 19-year-old girl has been arrested by Pune City Police for allegedly kidnapping a 16-year-old boy and “pretending to be his wife”. The offence was registered at the Vishrantwadi police station on Tuesday following a complaint lodged by the boy’s family. Police have booked the girl under sections 363 (kidnapping), 496 (marriage ceremony fraudulently gone through without lawful marriage), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code. According to police, the accused and the boy live in the same locality in Dhanori and know each other well.
A police officer said that the two had gone missing a couple of weeks ago. Their family members lodged separate missing person’s complaints with the Vishrantwadi police station on September 24.
Police traced the couple to Dighi area on Tuesday, where they were found to be living together. The police investigation later revealed that the girl, who was wearing a mangalsutra, allegedly pretended to be the wife of the minor.
The boy’s family alleged that the girl had calling him repeatedly, trying to persuade him to run away from home, despite knowing that he was a minor. “We arrested the accused based on the FIR lodged by the boy’s mother. She has been granted bail by the court,” said Police Sub-Inspector M B Jogan, the investigating officer of the case. Police said both the girl and the boy are school dropouts and their parents are daily wage workers.
