Efforts at the local level are on to accommodate more aircraft. A new hangar is under construction and is likely to be completed by December. This may accommodate additional 3-4 small aircraft from the present lot. Thus we can address pending requests, said an official. We have also requested IAF to allot five acres. Talks are on and in case the proposal falls through,we may be able to build three bays that can accommodate 12 aircraft.
But the operators/ owners have a different take on the issue. Wing Commander (retd) W H Marshall,CEO,Poonawalla Aviation, said,It is high time the government gives priority to aviation. Infrastructure plays a critical role in boosting private aviation. Our policies are leftovers from 1930s. Such low was the priority given to aviation that it was once attached to tourism ministry. On Pune,Marshall said,Legendary industrialists such as late S L Kirloskar were the ones to realise that owning aircraft was the requirement of progressive Indian businesses. This is true even today when surface transport has its limitations. Bodies like AAI are toothless,it is DGCA that needs to consider this issue on a policy level.
