Home Minister RR Patil highlighted the need for more stringent laws to control sexual harassment of women and called for strengthening the Women Vigilance Committee (WVCs).
Patil was speaking at inauguration of a three-day state-level conference of WVC members organised by the Pune Police commissionerate at Centre for Police Research on Monday.
Pune Police Commissioner Meeran Borwankar, member secretary of state commission for women Shomita Biswas were also present on the occasion.
I feel there is a need to make articles 354 and 509 that deal with harassment of women more stringent.
The minister said that there has been an increase in cases of women harassment and dowry deaths, but that does not mean there has been an increase in the incidence of crime.
There were 7,035 cases of women harassment and 393 cases of dowry deaths in the state last year,Patel said.
This means that more women are coming forward to register an offence against the culprit rather than remaining silent and this is definitely a positive step, the minister added.
