Despite efforts from leaders of both NCP and Congress, the pre-poll alliance between the two parties for the upcoming Pune Municipal Corporation elections has failed to materialise. There will be no pre-poll alliance between the two parties for PCMC and Solapur civic bodies as well.

A series of meetings between senior party leaders of both the parties concluded without any result. “Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar had made it clear that the NCP will not have pre-poll alliance with the Congress. The NCP has made all preparations to go alone,” said NCP spokesperson Ankush Kakade.

He said the NCP was clear about opposing the pre-poll alliance. Congress has been under public scrutiny after the city MP Suresh Kalmadi was arrested in alleged corruption case while organising the Commonweath Games. “The NCP will not be able to corner the Congress if there is a pre-poll alliance. There is a strong opinion within the party to stay away from the Congress,he said.

Kakade said the pre-poll alliance that is being suggested for select panels was of no use. “There are certain strongholds of saffron combine in the city and even if the Congress,NCP fight it together, the saffron combine will sail through,” he added.

The Congress leadership in the city too have been favouring to contest the polls on its own. “We are an established party with strong foundation. The NCP has not treated us well in the past five years and it will better for us to contest the civic polls on our own,” said a Congress leader.
