Mayor Vaishali Bankar’s stint as mayor may be short-lived if the ruling NCP has its way. NCP is looking to induct a woman from OBC category for 15 months. Bankar completed 15 months as mayor in May.

The mayor elected for a 30- month term for which the present term is reserved for woman corporator from OBC category.

While appointing Bankar as mayor,Dy CM Ajit Pawar said the term (30 months) will be equally divided among two representatives. This was done to avoid unrest within the party. “We are considering a change of mayor and had discussion. The decision will be taken by senior leaders,” said city NCP chief Vandana Chavan.

At present, there is a bypoll for one seat of PMC and the party will not like to make announcements to avoid any any violation of code of conduct. Chavan said the party will take a decision after bypolls. Bankar,a first-time corporator, became a mayor due to the proximity of her family to top party leaders. There were other candidates vying for the post, but their hopes were kept alive when the top brass said Bankar will be the mayor for 15 months. Bankar had drawn flak for including her husband and son as NGO representatives for a study tour to Korea.

“It was wrong on the part of mayor to include her family members as NGO representatives in the PMC delegation. The party has conveyed its displeasure,” Chavan added.
