A Pune man belonging to the Khandelwal Vaishya community has lodged a police complaint against members of Jat Panchayat for allegedly restraining him from attending his mother’s funeral.

Sanjay Amichand Khandelwal (45),a resident of Warje Malwadi, lodged the complaint at Kothrud police station on Monday. Police booked panchayat members Kailas Khandelwal,Vaishya Samaj,Jamnalal Khandelwal,Maganlal Khandelwal,Chaganlal Khandelwal from Rajasthan and 15 others under Sections 341 (wrongful restraint),120 (b) (criminal conspiracy),506 (criminal intimidation),34 of the Indian Penal Code.

In his statement to the police,Sanjay — who runs a beer shop in Warje area — said his mother Premibai was living with his brother Prakash in Kothrud. He said he got married to a woman from his caste about 20 years ago. But due to disputes, his wife wanted a divorce. When his wife’s relatives raised the issue with the caste panchayat,it asked him to divorce his wife. But when he refused,he was allegedly declared an ‘outcast’.

After his mother died on October 13,Sanjay went to pay his respects but the panchayat members didn’t allow him,he claimed. Then on the 12th day ritual on October 23,he went to his native place on Abu Road in Rajasthan but there too the caste panchayat members did not allow him to take part. They also threatened to beat him up and hand out stern punishment for “insulting” the panchayat, claimed Sanjay.

“We have registered an FIR. Further investigation is on,” said Police Inspector S B Nawale.
