The Pune rural police have arrested a 28-year-old man for alleged human sacrifice of a woman and her son in the lure of a “money rain”,as told by a “godman”. The suspect,Sunil Baban Pachange alias Avdut Babab Pandav (28),a resident of Pachange chawl in Dapodi, was on Monday produced before a Khed court, which remanded him in police custody till May 24.

Deceased Dhananjay Raju Jagtap (22) and his mother Durgabai Jagtap (50) were residents of Balut Ali in Chakan.

Police said Dhananjay was a close friend of Sunil and he killed him and his mother on the instructions of a godman. An offence of murder has been lodged in Chakan police station.

“During interrogation,Sunil admitted that a godman had told him that money (currency notes) would rain over him if he killed two persons on Ashtami (Eighth day of the month in Lunar calendar – April 18) and Dashami ( 10th day – April 20). Sunil said he met the godman a few days before he committed the murders but refused to reveal his identity,” said senior inspector Sushil Kadam.

While Sunil is a graduate,Dhananjay had done his M.Com and was looking for a job. Dhananjay, whose father died about 20 years ago, reportedly suspected that his mother was having an affair.

Police said Dhananjay had told Sunil that he was upset with his mother’s behaviour and wanted to kill her. The duo then planned to kill her at Lonavla. On April 18,Sunil took Dhananjay to Lonavla to explain how they would execute the murder. On the pretext of giving a demonstration, the police said,Sunil tied Dhananjay with a rope and actually killed him by attacking with an iron rod on his head.

Sunil returned to Chakan and told Durgabai that Dhananjay did not come with him as he had bagged a good job. Two days later,on April 20,Sunil took Durgabai to Chakan on the pretext of visiting a temple where he slit her throat and threw her body in a well.

Local villagers fished out the body and informed the police. Dhananjay’s friend Satyam Kelkar identified Durgabai’s body. Meanwhile, police also found Dhananjay’s body at Lonavla.

On the basis of suspicion, police detained Sunil on Sunday. He reportedly confessed before the police that he committed the crime in the lure of a “money rain”,as he was told by a godman.
