THE MAHARASHTRA State Electricity Distribution Company Limited has undertaken pre-monsoon maintenance work on a war footing and various repair works are underway. “Work is underway on distribution panel (DP) boxes, feeders, transformers, tree branch cutting and replacement of cables and oil change,” said Neelkanth Raut, public relations officer of MSEDCL.
“We cannot predict what will happen during the monsoon but our teams — line men, technical staff and disaster management units —are all on call to attend to any kind of emergency situation,” Raut added. Change of oil in condensers, breakers and maintenance of oil level in transformers are some of the important works besides replacing various gadgets in the power supply system. Earthings are also being checked so that no short circuits occur.
Several MSEDCL officials, especially in the Rasta Peth sub division, pointed out that due to heavy tree cover, priority has been given to tree cutting. Some areas have overhead wires and unseasonal rains can damage the lines and disrupt the supply.
However, going by the past experiences, not many residents are assured of uninterrupted power supply. Vivek Velankar, President of Sajag Grahak Manch, said “Every Thursday, the MSEDCL shuts power supply in various areas so that they can undertake maintenance works. We hope this time at least there are no major incidents of power failure due to lack of preparedness.” Meanwhile, toll free numbers 1800-200-3435 or 1800-233-3435 are functional.
