The beats instantly lift your spirits and when the lyrics,Hello World, how are you today? flow in,the listener breaks into a grin. Those who love to dance might even begin a mild head bob. Released a month ago,Hello World is Anish Sood and Ramona Arena’s second project together after they musically clicked on their first venture titled I wanna be your only love, last year.
We really can’t put a finger on what made us click, but I guess it is because both of us are clear about what kind of music we want to do. When we did the first track,Ramona was living in Mumbai and I was in Goa. There should have been a lot of back and forth, but there was hardly any, says Sood, adding that they wanted to pioneer the concept of international dance music in India. Arena says though there have been Indian vocalists collaboarating with international DJs or vice-versa,this is the first time that an Indian DJ has collaborated with an Indian vocalist.
Sood’s love for the beaches was an inspiration for their latest feel-good track. It is a song that puts a smile on people’s faces when it is played on the radio early morning. It rejuvenates them and gives them energy to kick start their day, says Sood, who performed with Arena at High Spirits,Koregaon Park on Friday. For Arena, though, the track is a tribute to music. My life revolves around music,be it VJing at MTV,or radio,or even singing, composing and writing songs. It is the essence of my whole life,it is my saviour. I feel that music chose me. When things don’t go my way,I turn up the music and I know I’ll be okay. The song is about music being my best friend, always there for me,in happy times and sad, says Arena.
Writing songs for over a decade,Arena says she wasn’t being able to work on them due to professional commitments. She shares that after singing an English chorus for DJ Aqeel in Keh Doon Tumhe, she waited for the right time while completing her prior commitments to start off her career as a vocalist. Then came the offer to feature as Subziwalli in Alien Chutney’s latest video. It was the toughest shoot of my life. Keeping a straight face and pretending to be hopelessly in love with Vir Das as he sung in that high pitched make-believe subziwalli voice was very difficult, says Arena. She adds that though she did not lend her vocals for the video, two collaborations with Sood has set the ball rolling.
