There was confusion regarding the rape allegations since the hospital nurses insisted that they had not seen the woman go out of the female ward of the Bhosari hospital on Thursday or Friday. But it was the lift operator who provided the clue and made officials believe that the incident had actually taken place. The delay in receiving the medical report from Sassoon Hospital has only added to the confusion.

Immediately after the ward boy and the watchman were arrested on Sunday, senior PCMC medical officials led by Dr Anil Roy,Medical officer of Health, began an investigation. They spoke to hospital incharge, doctors, nurses, ward boys and other staff members. The nurses insisted that they had not seen the victim move out of the hospital in the late evening Thursday.

The hospital doctors said since August 26 when the woman was admitted to hospital, they had been monitoring her health.”Last three-four days, she had been smiling whenever we asked her about her health. On Saturday, the day of the discharge from the hospital, the woman wasn’t smiling,” said Dr Shankar Jadhav who had examined her. The doctor said he had seen two female attendants with the patient on Friday.

Two of the lift operators who worked on first and third shift came to the hospital first around 1 pm on Sunday. Both of them denied having seen the victim use the lift. The third lift operator Kiran Supe, who had worked on the second shift on August 26,told the PCMC team he generally locks the lift in the evening.

“On that day around 8.30 pm,I had gone and sat some 100 metres away from the lift after locking it,” he said. When asked how long he remained away from the lift,he said,”I must be away for 10-15 minutes.” The police suspect it was during this period that the crime was committed. But who unlocked it ? The lift operator said the watchman keeps another key with himself. The watchman allegedly helped the ward boy in committing the crime, the police doubt. At the Bhosari police station, the watchman said during late evening hours,he takes round of the hospital and checks the lift. “On that particular day I had gone to the second floor of the hospital around 8.30 pm…” He insisted that he was not involved in the incident. “I did not even touch the woman,” he said. The police suspect that he helped the ward boy in committing the crime.

The ward boy,Shailesh Jadhav, said he was on day shift on that particular day. “I had come to the hospital around 8 pm on that day to see my brother who had been admitted to the hospital. I left the hospital around 10.30 pm,” he told the police. The ward boy said he was a permanent employee of PCMC for 10 years. “I was transferred to Bhosari hospital on May 2,2012,” he said.

Jadhav lives in Bhosari. Hospital staff said since he stayed close by,he frequently visits the hospital even during off days or non-duty hours. The watchman works with a private security agency .
