Protesting against the change in inspection norms, hike in excise duty and service tax, city goldsmiths and jewellers under the banner of Kothrud Saraf Association took out a rally from Karve Nagar to Kothrud on Thursday evening.

Pradeep Maid, president of the association said,“According to the new norms proposed in the Union budget,we will have to undergo random inspections, such as give written accounts of our stock in the shop and transactions with our customers on a daily basis. Such stringent norms will require us to hire additional staff for extra paperwork. This is not

possible for small jewellery establishments.”

Gold jewellers have been on a nationwide strike since March 18 against these new norms that are to be introduced this financial year.
