A jail official was reportedly manhandled by an inmate at the Yerawada Central Jail on Saturday morning.
Vaman Tukaram Nimje (44),the jailor,has lodged a complaint in this regard at the Yerawada police station. As per the complaint,the incident took place at 10.15 am near Gandhi Yard in the prison. Police have identified the accused as Vijay Dilip Charya,a resident of Khadki,who is lodged in jail in connection with a theft case.
As per reports,Rs 1,000 in cash was recovered from the possession of another prisoner,Jay Rajesh Bhosale. He told the jail officials that other prisoners Rohidas Gupte and Rajendra Kamthe had given him the cash.
Investigating officer assistant police inspector Shivaji Bendre said jail officials were questioning Gupte. The complainant jailor and two other staffers were walking towards a cell to bring Kamthe for questioning when Charya stopped them on the way and asked the officer why they were questioning Gupte. Charya also accused them of falsely implicating him and allegedly manhandled them. He has been booked under Section 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) of the Indian Penal Code.
