The shift of power and the new found bonhomie between NCP and BJP in the state is not likely to have any drastic impact on the power equation in the Pune Zilla Parishad, where the former enjoys a clear majority. NCP and BJP leaders are hoping the changed political equation may actually help the two parties work to the detriment of Shiv Sena and Congress.
In the 75-member strong Pune ZP, NCP enjoys absolute power with 39 members while the BJP has only three. Sena and Congress have 12 and 11 members, respectively.
“The change of power at the state won’t have any impact as the NCP does not need any support from other parties. Barring Maval, the NCP has presence in all 13 talukas in the district,” said an NCP member. Prashant Patil, an NCP worker from Shirur, said the current BJP wave might help the party in the 2016 Zilla Parishad elections.
“BJP MLAs have won in Maval, Shirur and Khadakwasla. This will help them in Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti polls. Also, the bonhomie with the BJP will help both parties to work against the Congress and the Sena. It’s possible that the BJP and the NCP may form an alliance,” said Patil.
