Barely a month after Lakme Fashion Week drew attention for its first finale presented by young designers, comes the news of the ouster of Anjana Sharma. She headed event management company IMG’s fashion division in India which, since the latters inception has been collaborating with Lakme on the event. Sharma allegedly drew flak for having over-championed the cause of younger designers without striking the right balance. The sponsors were reportedly miffed with the absence of established names and with the fact that the finale was helmed by two young names. Muck flies fast in an industry rife with work politics and the gossip mills which are working overtime at the moment over Sharma’s exit also suggest other issues. Insiders say that Kallol Datta’s collection was not befitting a finale by the organisers, while Pankaj and Nidhi— lauded for their cutting edge designs—were later accused of allegedly copying a design from Givenchy’s Fall/ winter 2012 collection for their showstopper outfit for Kareena Kapoor. When contacted,Pankaj said he was saddened by Sharma’s exit. “She truly appreciated young talent,” he said. He admitted that he had also checked out the Givenchy outfit that his finale creation was being compared with. “I wouldn’t say that there are no similarities but let me emphasise that it is an unfortunate coincidence. Our colour theme had been decided in advance and lattic work is our forte. Why would we stake our reputation by copying from someone else, and that too for our finale?” he said. Sharma remained unavailable for comment despite repeated attempts to reach her for her side of the story. All’s not well it seems, since it hasn’t ended well.
