Heavy rains lashed Pune city,Pimpri-Chinchwad and surrounding areas on Tuesday. The Met department attributed the rains due to the low pressure area over west central Bay of Bengal adjoining coastal Andhra Pradesh as well as east west share zone along latitude 13 degree north.

The withdrawal of monsoon has commenced from September 9. India’s monsoon rains usually start retreating from the country’s west by mid-September. The withdrawal of monsoon rains starts from Rajasthan and adjourning north-west India around early next week.

The last few years have seen a continous delay so the forecasters are keeping a close watch, they added. The withdrawal of the monsoon will start from extreme northern parts of Rajasthan, bordering Pakistan but with the “western disturbance” there will be increased moisture content in the air therefore prolonging the rain spell.

Once the moisture content in the air reduces, the rainfall will remain weak over northern parts of the country and the monsoon ceases by month end. The IMD had stated that the September rainfall will be normal and it had also predicted that the overall rainfall across the country to be around 98 per cent of the long period average.
