Social activist Anna Hazare on Thursday said the Congress debacle in the recent Assembly polls was due to the Congress-led UPA government’s failure in getting a strong Lokpal bill,as demanded by him, passed.

He warned of a nation-wide agitation for a strong Lokpal bill soon after the 2012 Lok Sabha election dates are announced.

“The performance of the Congress in the five states would not have been this bad if the Jan Lokpal bill would have been passed,” said Hazare at a book release in the city.

“We will bring before the public how the Union government had cheated the people on the Lokpal bill. The agitation would continue to get full support,” Hazare said adding that he would campaign for the Jan Lokpal bill, his version of the ombudsman,in all states.

Had the Jan Lokpal bill been passed, those accused in the Adarsh Society would have been in jail by now, added Hazare. He said he would only hold talks with the government if a strong Lokpal is recommended.
