The Anti-Narcotics Cell of the Pune police arrested a 37-year-old citizen of the Republic of Guinea after 151 grams of cocaine worth over Rs 15 lakh was seized from him.
A team from the cell was working on information about some cocaine peddlers who are active in Vimannagar, Koregaon Park, Kalyaninagar, MG Road and Kondhwa. The team received a tip off that a Guinea national would visit Pune Camp to sell the contraband.
On Thursday, the police laid a trap at East Street in Camp and arrested a suspect identified as Cheriff Mohammed, a resident of NIBM Road in Kondhwa.
The police said he possessed a passport of the Republic of Guinea.
Inspector Fattehsingh Patil of the cell said, “He came to India on a business visa on the pretext of dealing in garments but has been peddling drugs. Though he has not revealed much information, we suspect he smuggled the contraband from Goa.”
A senior police officer said, “There is a major problem with registering an offence against these criminals. Once they are booked they cannot leave the country until court passes its verdict. This gives them another four to five year extension for their stay in India. These suspects eventually secure bail and go back to selling drugs.”
In the past four months, the cell has arrested three Nigerian nationals and have seized drugs like cocaine and Methacholine.
