In a bid to promote electronic meters in autorickshaws, the Regional Transport Office (RTO),Pune,in association with autorickshaw unions and meter manufactures, held a camp on Saturday and Sunday at the Alandi office of the RTO.

About 185 autorickshaws from Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad got electronic meters installed in these two days. RTO,Pune, had deputed additional fitness inspection staff to speed up the process. At present, the city has over 800 autorickshaws plying with electronic meters. Regional Transport Officer,Pune,Arun Yeola, said,“The idea is to rope in more autorickshaws for the electronic meters now that they have been made mandatory by the state government. As the manufacturers were also present in today’s event, many of them offered discounts as a part of the camp. After that our officers carried out inspections and sealed the meters.”

He said similar drives were carried out at the Mumbai RTOs and as the response was good. More such camps may be organised soon. Baba Shinde, from the Pune City Autorickshaw Federation, said,“The campaign turned out to be a huge hit with autorickshaw owners and drivers as it saved a lot of time. Usually the process of purchasing the meter and getting the paperwork done for the fitness test takes about a week. But in the two days, the process of installation was completed in about two hours as both manufacturers and RTO officials were present on the same premises.”
