Girish Sant,a noted analyst and an advocate of pro-people scientific policies in the energy and power sector,passed away in New Delhi following a cardiac arrest on Thursday. Sant was 46.
Sant was a co-founder of NGO,Prayas and had been a co-ordinator of its energy group,which is known for its contribution to the policy advocacy in the power sector.
Sant will be remembered for his scientific criticism of some major power projects including the Sardar Sarovar project and tariff policy of state power distribution company. He was a member of the Climate Experts Group under Basic countries,the Planning Commissions Experts Committee on the Low Carbon Strategy for Inclusive Growth and the 12th Plan Steering Committee of the Ministry of Non-Renewable Energy and Ministry of Power, said Kailas Kulkarni of Prayas Energy Group in a release.
Sant had completed his B.Tech in Chemical Engineering from IIT-Bombay in 1986 followed by his Masters in Energy Systems Engineering in 1988. He contributed immensely to the national and international debate on energy policy and regulation,especially in the light of climate change. His recent work focused more on the optimal and equitable use of existing energy and environmental resources to enable true socio-economic development. said the release.
