THE foundation stone for a foot overbridge across Castellino Road was laid on Tuesday. L K Pegu, principal director, Defence Estates, Southern Command, Dr D N Yadav, CEO, Pune Cantonment Board, Atul Gaikwad, vice-president, and other elected members were present at the function.
Traffic from Kondhwa and Salisbury Park areas in the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) limits passes through Castellino Road from Swargate and, proceeding towards Hadapsar, passes from Solapur Road, crossing Golibar Maidan Chowk.
Yadav said, “Due to the BRT project, the entire traffic passes through Castellino Road. This has led to severe congestion.” “A number of educational institutions — Poona College, Abeda Inamdar college, Anglo Urdu School, Kanya Shala, Utkarsh English Medium School and St Anthony’s School — are located near Castellino Road. There are a couple of multi-storeyed building in and around the area. On an average, about 10,000 to 12,000 commuters take this route and it is expected that there shall be an increase of about 15 per cent in the traffic,” said cantonment board authorities. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 3.82 crore.
“The unique material being used for this foot overbridge is of pre-cast structural steel and first of its kind in Pune. The project is expected to be completed within a year,” he added.
