PUNE: Former Congress MLA Sambhaji Ramchandra Kunjir was on Tuesday arrested by the Pune rural police and booked for attempt to murder after he allegedly opened fire on a guard at a stockyard in Theur over a land dispute.
Police said one of the three bullets fired by Kunjir hit watchman Balu Sunil Hiwale (24) in the neck and he was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of Nobel hospital.
According to the police,Hiwale is an employee of retired Navy Commander Deepak Naik with whom Kunjir had a running land dispute since 1995. Both had earlier filed complaints against each other.
On Tuesday afternoon,around 3.30 pm,Kunjir and his aides allegedly reached the said land in a four-wheeler and started a quarrel with the workers there. Police said Kunjir fired three bullets from his revolver,which had a licence. One was fired in the air and another hit the ground. The third hit Hiwale,police sources said.
Speaking to The Indian Express,Commander (rtd) Naik said,It is our ancestral farm,part of which is used as stockyard. Kunjir has been threatening workers at stockyard and we had filed police complaints against him earlier. Today he came to the spot with his men and opened fire. Hiwale,who was hit by the bullet on the neck had to undergo surgery at Nobel hospital, said Naik.
Security supervisor at the stockyard,Dnyandev Shevale lodged a complaint at Loni Kalbhor police station. Police have booked Kunjir and his aides under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of Indian Penal Code. Inspector Suhad Garud is investigating the case. Kunjir has filed a counter-complaint at Loni Kalbhor PS against seven people working at the site for allegedly attacking him. He claimed he had opened fire in self defence.
