Fev India,a developer of advanced powertrain and vehicle technologies,on Friday, announced the opening of a technical centre at MIDC,Talegaon. Prof Stefan Pischinger, chairman and chief executive officer,FEV Group, said the centre, set up with an investment of Rs 35 crore, would be used for powertrain and vehicle development and primarily service clients in the Pune region.
The facility will significantly improve the interface with our clients and open up mutual partnership opportunities, Pishchinger said. The centre is spread across five acres, and is capable of hosting 12 engine and powertrain test benches and an area for the assembly of test systems.
A total of six test benches are part of the first construction phase. There are 48 employees at present, with the number expected to go up to 70 by the year-end. Although company sources declined to reveal the names of most of their clients, they said blue-chip automakers such as Tata Motors,Volkswagen and Maruti Suzuki are among them. A few years back,FEV had helped out M&M with the revamp of their diesel engine for the Scorpio, said Sushil Berry, managing director.
Regarding possible expansion plans,Prof Pischinger said,The present facility can be ramped up by a factor of three. We can set up a maximum of 36 test benches,if the need arises.
When asked whether it was a good idea to launch the centre during an economic slowdown,Berry said,In our business, the whole cycle from conception to production takes a minimum of three years. A new car or a new engine has to be conceptualised years in advance,so these downturns do not affect us much.
