FDA bans flavored tobacco,betelnut for a year

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has decided to ban the sale of flavoured tobacco and betelnut.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has decided to ban the sale of flavoured tobacco and betelnut in the state for one year.

Addressing the media Shashikant Kekare,joint commissioner,FDA,Pune,said since the ban on gutkha has been implemented in the state,the FDA has managed to confiscate gutkha worth over Rs 1 crore from 89 places in the district. As many as 24 cases have been filed so far and almost all the confiscated guktha has been destroyed,he added. Kekare said it will not be difficult to implement a ban on flavoured tobacco and betelnut,as there are no manufacturers of these products in the state. “In order to implement the ban properly,we have tied up with NGOs and railway police. We will keep an eye at bus stations to prevent entry of such goods in the state,” he said.
