Contrary to its earlier stand, the Maharashtra State Board for Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) has made model answers of the recent board examination available on their official website after being confronted by an RTI query.

Till now,the state board has said that model answers are confidential documents, meant only for examination authorities.

In June, activist Vivek Velankar of local advocacy group Sajag Nagarika Manch, had asked the MSBSHSE to post model answers of the Higher Secondary Certificate examination on their official website. The demand, however, was rejected by MSBSHSE.

Velankar then demanded the answers under the RTI Act,citing the Supreme Court judgement delivered in September 2011 pertaining to the issue. “The Public Information Officer (PIO) denied model answers in response to my RTI application. When I made an appeal, the appellate authority handed over the model answers in light of the verdict of the apex court,” he told Newsline.

“We have already submitted a memorandum demanding that model answers of all subjects of class X and class XII examinations be published on the date of result itself for the benefit of students,” he said.

Several activists believe that if the answers are in the public domain,it would reduce the number of applications for revaluation and allow students to save money as the charges for revaluation are Rs 300 per paper.

MSBSHSE secretary Krushnkumar Patil said,“It is a policy decision and we have to get it approved through competent panels,” he said.
