Dr. Anil Awachat, social activist and author, would be the chief guest at a function at Suma-tibhai Shah Ayurved Mahavidya-laya in Hadapsar. While UNESCO had declared June 19 as World Sickle Cell Day, Mandal trustee Dr SL Kate said the function would be held Tuesday. Sickle cell is a genetic blood disorder due to defective haemoglobin in RBCs. The patient suffers from mild to moderate anemia, jaundice and severe joint pains. Most patients have enlarged spleen (an abdominal organ in the left upper portion) and intermediary sickle cell crisis. If prompt and proper treatment is unavailable, the patient may succumb to death. In Maharashtra, there are over 2.5 lakh patients suffering from sickle cell.
