The entertainment tax department during the weekend conducted raids on as many as seven hotels for evasion of tax and hiring disc jockeys without permission.

Although, many hotels have been cancelling their live events post the recent raids, the department is ensuring all the events are conducted as per the norms.
Shirke said the entertainment tax division grants permission for running a discotheque after payment of Rs 50,000 per month. If a hotel fails to obtain permission, one attracts a penalty of one-and-half times the amount.
In case of disc jockey, the penalty amount is ascertained from the time the hotel has hired him/her without informing the department.

Shirke said they have slapped a penalty of Rs 1.5 lakh just for last month and added another Rs 2,000 as other fine. She said the final figure that the restaurant will have to pay will be out in two days after calculating the period of tax evasion.
