Dr Pradnya Hegde Kakodkar called upon budding doctors to stick to four major principles of medical ethics. She was speaking at the World Bioethics Day celebrations at Dr Ajeenkya DY Patil University in Pune.

“Principle of respect for autonomy means that all patients have the right to know about the procedure that is going to be carried out on them..,” said Kakodkar, Editor-in-Chief, Association of Dental Research and Scientific Development.

“Principle of maleficence means that dentist shall not do any procedure that is not indicated merely for financial benefits. Principle of beneficence means that the patient should be benefited from the treatment plan offered. Principal of justice means patient should get value for money and get proper treatment even if it is provided free of cost,” she said. Patients, she said, have a right of privacy and confidentiality. “Dentist must also have a female assistant or relative of the patient around while treating or examining a female patient.”
