Differences within the city unit of NCP came to the fore on Friday, after 48 corporators from the party in Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) submitted a letter to party chief Sharad Pawar, expressing discontent over the bio-diversity park (BDP) reservation within the civic jurisdiction.
This, even as the party, under the guidance of city chief Vandana Chavan, voted in its favour of it during finalisation of the development plan (DP) of the merged villages.
The disgruntled elected representatives of NCP grabbed the opportunity to take up their point with the party chief, after a function held in Pune on Friday to inaugurate the equestrian statue of Maratha warrior Shivaji at the National Defence Academy (NDA).
The PMC has reserved 978 hectares of land in the plan of merged villages for BDP and most of the corporators of the ruling NCP are opposing it. The party voted in favour of BDP during the finalisation of DP and the city NCP chief is in favour of keeping the green cover intact by disallowing public interference.
The party corporators had expressed displeasure to state leaders and sought to meet Pawar on the issue. The party has the maximum number of corporators from the 23 merged villages. We were never taken into confidence while deciding on the BDP. This unrest might have an adverse impact on party performance during the forthcoming Assembly and Lok Sabha polls, one of them said.
The corporators have sought Pawars time to discuss the issue in detail, they added.
