As many as 1.17 lakh women are signatories to a memorandum that demands appointment of a chairperson to the state commission for women. Shiv Sena MLC Neelam Gorhe, who along with like-minded women from the political and social field set up a committee to pursue action against violence on women, said the post has been lying vacant for four years.
The post was held by Advocate Rajni Satav until September 20,2009.
Considering the increase in the number of crimes against women, the commision without a chairperson cannot do much as it is a victim of government apathy,Gorhe said in statement.
We have collected over a lakh signatures of women protesting against this indifference, Gorhe added.
Advocate Varsha Deshpande,a member of the committee and a founder of the Lek Laadki Abhiyaan, called for reconstituting the commission with women from across the state. Women have several issues that are not fully represented, she said.
The memorandum will be submitted to the Maharashtra governor.
