Dabholkar murder: ATS chief meets Pune cops,hunt on for ‘contract killers’

State Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) chief Rakesh Maria on Monday met Pune police officers to discuss progress in the investigation of Dr Narendra Dabholkar’s murder. Pune Police Commissioner Gulabrao Pol and other senior police and ATS officers were present in the meeting.

Police sources said investigators have come to a conclusion that it was a contract killing. Apparently,investigating teams are zeroing in on underworld gangsters for getting clues about the assailants. The possibility of the involvement of right wing organisations is also being probed.

Search for absconding terror suspects such as Sarang Akolkar of Shaniwar Peth,Pune — who was a member of Sanatan Sanstha and wanted in the Madgaon blasts in Goa — has been intensified.

Maria is a senior and experienced cop known for his investigations into underworld and terrorism-related crimes. In the meeting,he reportedly said ATS will extend all possible help to the teams probing the Dabholkar case.

DIG (ATS) Sanjiv Latkar confirmed that Maria held a meeting with city police commissioner and other sleuths on Monday. “We are giving full co-operation to the teams probing the murder,” he said.

Meanwhile,sources said probe teams are questioning persons associated with gangsters in Pune,Mumbai,Nashik and Thane. Cops also grilling gangsters lodged in Yerawada and Taloja jails to get information about the alleged sharpshooters,who are believed to have killed Dabholkar on Omkareshwar Bridge on August 20. History sheeters associated with right wing extremist groups are also being questioned. Black magicians and self-styled godmen,who had opposed the activist,are also under scanner.
