A special CBI court Thursday dismissed Suresh Kalmadi’s plea for exemption from appearance in court for two days beginning tomorrow so that he can visit Pune for a medical check-up and to meet members of his family.

Special Judge Talwant Singh, however, said Kalmadi could go to Pune on February 11 and 12 when the court is shut. Trial in a Commonwealth Games-related case against him and several others is scheduled to begin next week.

The judge said Kalmadi had failed to utilise an opportunity to visit Pune last week. The court rejected the medical reasons given in the application, saying Kalmadi was under treatment at two private hospitals in Delhi and Gurgaon, which were among the best for heart ailments. The court decision dashed hopes of Congress candidates to have him campaign for them ahead of polls.
