The civic staff of the water supply department, who have been facing the wrath of corporators for irregular and insufficient water supply, have now found support from a few corporators who want some work incentives for the staff to address water woes of the city.

In a proposal tabled in the standing committee,NCP corporator Bapu Karne and MNS corporator Rajendra Wagaskar proposed incentives for the staff . “The civic staff of the water supply department have to suffer a lot while performing their duties. They have to report to work whenever their service is sought within 24 hours,” said Karne.

He said that those working in the department are never happy as they have to face the wrath of citizens as well as elected representatives. “The octroi department gives incentives to its staff for good work. Similarly, there should be incentives for staff of the water supply department as the job is equally tedious,” Karne added. He said that considering the heavy workload, they need to be encouraged for their efforts.

Earlier this month,MNS activists had poured water on PMC water supply chief V G Kulkarni in protest against water cuts in the city. But now,MNS corporator Wagaskar is seeking incentives for the staff. “The civic officers of water supply department are responsible for poor management of water. Juniors only execute what is planned by seniors. The juniors have a tough task to do and need to be encouraged,” he said.

All praise for the staff, Wagaskar said the staff has been doing their job honestly for years. “The civic staff on duty is well versed with the water supply network and issues of their respective area. They work throughout the year without any complaints but don’t get rewards for their hard work.”

Civic activist Vivek Velankar, however, expressed shock over such a move. “This will send a wrong message. If the proposal is passed, then it will demoralise the staff of the other departments. The civic body should instead think of felicitating selected staff of every department for their good performance,” he said.
