The Pune Zilla Parishad has decided to equip all its schools with computers with community support by the end of the academic year 2013-14 . Through this initiative,3,746 schools will get at least one computer per school by March-end ,said ZP officials.
When I was in Akole taluka,I had initiated the project. We made the community aware of the importance of computers and today every ZP school in the taluka has a computer, said Mushtak Shaikh,Education Officer,ZP. He added,We have asked all the block education officers to initiative this project in their respective blocks. The panchayat samitis in villages will help in achieving this objective by seeking monetary help from people, he added.
Shaikh said computers are necessary as the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is an important subject. Besides, administrative work in schools can also be done through computers. It is up to the schools to decide whether they want computers or laptops and in what number. But every school will get at least one computer, he said.
Shaikh said laptops will serve better in schools which do not have electricity as headmasters can charge it at their homes. They can also work during load shedding,he added.
The ZP has sent a proposal to the power ministry to include schools under ZP in the domestic category for electricity supply. Many schools in rural areas have been provided with commercial power connections, the rates for which are high . We have found that connections to some schools were discontinued after they could not pay power bills, said Shaikh.
