Classes for MSRTC drivers to beat stress

The medical check-up drive undertaken by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation ended on Wednesday without finding any case of psychiatric disorder,but it has brought to light that considerable number of MSRTC drivers suffer from stress related ailments.

The medical check-up drive undertaken by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) ended on Wednesday without finding any case of psychiatric disorder,but it has brought to light that considerable number of MSRTC drivers suffer from stress related ailments. To fight this,Pune Division of the MSRTC has decided to launch a ‘stress management class’ for drivers and conductors of all the 14 depots under the Pune division including three depots in the city and Pimpari-Chinchwad.

The doctors revealed that out of 572 drivers about 20 per cent suffer from ailments such as hypertension,high blood sugar and heart related ailments.

Ashok Jadhav,Pune Divisional Controller of MSRTC said that the issue was discussed in a meeting of depot managers held on Tuesday. “We have decided to conduct stress management classes for our drivers,conductors and other staff. These classes will teach them yoga,pranayama to cope with stress,” Jadhav said.

Sources said that yoga teachers from Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali Yogapeeth have been roped in to conduct the classes. The class would be held on every Wednesday though the timing of the class is yet to be decided. “We are hoping that the yoga and pranayama will help the drivers improve their physical. We do not want our drivers to be ill and risk the lives of passengers,” said Jadhav.

A depot managers said successful passage through the ‘mental health test’ has boosted the confidence of drivers. “Now we are hoping that the upcoming classes would add to their confidence,” he said.
