A speeding PMC dumper knocked down and killed two women,one of them the co-founder of the ‘Accordion Fan Club’,on Wednesday near Chandani chowk. Forty-year-old Shivani Nitin Deshpande and her cousin Madhura Hemant Joshi (27),both residenits of Mayur Colony in Market Yard area,were moving on a scooter towards Chandani Chowk when the vehicle hit them from behind.

Deshpande was declared brought dead at a nearby private hospital and Joshi succumbed to injuries during treatment.

The police arrested dumper driver Sanjay Ziparu Bhure (42) residing in PMC quarters near Sarusbaug. The dumper belonged to the garden department of the PMC.

Police sub-inspector A K Jarkad of Warje Malwadi police station said the incident took place around 2 pm near Ved Vihar on Paud Road. “The women were going towards Chandani chowk. The dumper which was behind them,hit their scooter,” Jarkad said. Abhijit Joshi,a relative of the deceased,said Shivani was driving the scooter and Madhura was on the pillion.

Shivani is survived by her husband and 12-year-old daughter Maitreyee,a student of Class VII. Shivani and her husband enjoyed the accordion and had established the ‘Accordion Fan Club’. Madhura had completed a degree in law and was about to start her own practice in Pune.

“She hailed from Miraj in Sangli district,” Abhijit said.
