With the irrigation department not allowing the PMC to lift water as per its needs to cater to the citys demand, the civic body has decided to supply water once a day from Thursday.
On Monday, the irrigation department and PMC held the annual meeting for planning water usage for the year. The PMC demanded 11.5 TMC but the irrigation department offered 9.6 TMC,saying the civic bodys demand will be met on the condition that it completes the project of recycling water and closed pipeline from dam to purification plant by March 2014. However, the civic administration said it would be difficult to complete the work before December-end.
There will be limited availability of water for the rest of the year. Thus, the civic administration has decided to provide water once a day from Thursday, said V G Kulkarni,Executive Engineer of PMC.
The civic body used to lift 1,275 MLD water every day to meet the demand of citizens and now will get only 1,100 MLD. A time table for supply has been prepared, which will ensure one-time but sufficient water supply continuously for at least four hours, Kulkarni said, adding that this amounts to 15 per cent water cut.
Elected representatives in the PMC and civic activists had taken on the civic administration for a similar decision in the past as it created uneven supply in different parts of the city. Meanwhile,Opposition parties in the PMC have decided to take up the issue, with a Shiv Sena delegation meeting irrigation department officials to remove its limitation for water supply. There has been ample rainfall and the dams are filled to capacity. There is no reason why citizens should suffer, said Sena leader Ashok Harnaval.
The MNS and BJP have decided to take on the ruling NCP and Congress over the issue. The MNS will protest as the ruling parties are playing politics over it. This is being done keeping in mind the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections, and to please the voters of rural area by providing water for agriculture, said an MNS leader.
City Congress chief Abhay Chhajed said they have taken up the issue with the chief minister. We do not accept the decision of the irrigation department. The CM has assured us that he will look into the matter and ensure sufficient water supply to city, he said.
NCP leader Subhash Jagtap said there will not be any shortage of water as the party ministers assured that additional water would be supplied as and when required.
Last year, the PMC had for the first time decided to supply water once a day due to shortage of water in dams. However,it started twice-a-day supply after the arrival of monsoon. Good rains ensured that the dams supplying water to the city are full and raised the hopes of two-time supply in the city.
*The PMC,while announcing the time table for one-time water supply for city, ensured that citizens will either get water in the morning or evening. It has avoided odd hours and late night as it causes inconvenience to citizens
*In Pune University and Rajbhavan area, water will be supplied from 10 pm to 4 am,while Pashan-Baner Link Road will get water between 2 am and 4.30 am. Bhosale Nagar area will get water from 11 pm to 5.30 am
*In other parts of the city, the civic administration has ensured water supply after 5 am and in some parts after 5 pm
