City Briefs : Bharne is Zilla Parishad chief

NCP’s Dattatraya Bharne was elected president and Pradip Kand as vice-president of the Pune Zilla Parishad on Wednesday.

NCP’s Dattatraya Bharne was elected president and Pradip Kand as vice-president of the Pune Zilla Parishad on Wednesday. Bhare defeated Congress candidate Popat Dhole while Kand defeated Gulabrao Vargade of the BJP. The NCP has 42 members in the 75-member Zilla Parishad. The NCP candidates bagged 47 votes,five more than the party strength including four independents and an MNS vote.

Kadams on a high in Pimpri

It was the day of the Kadams in Pimpri-Chinchwad. While NCP appointed former mayor and sitting corporator Mangala Kadam as its leader in PCMC House,Congress corporator Kailas Kadam is all set to become the leader of opposition with support from independent corporators. A group of corporators that had extended support to NCP,on Wednesday decided to support Congress’ claim to the opposition leader’s post. Both the Congress and Shiv Sena have 14 members each and had been in the race for opposition leader’s post. NCP favoured the Congress as Sena has been attacking the party on several issues. Mangala Kadam has been appointed in view of her experience as corporator. She is also close to the Pawar family.

6th swine flu death confirmed in city

Sanjay Joshi,39,became the sixth patient to die of swine flu in the city this month. Joshi,a resident of Sadashiv Peth,died on March 19 at Sahyadri Hospital,and the throat swab results on Wednesday showed it was swine flu,said Dr Shyam Satpute,nodal officer of swine flu at Pune Municipal Corporation.
