Chain snatching incidents rise whenever police forces are diverted for VIP security, demolition drives and other bandobast,Pune police said on Thursday.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Shahaji Solunke said,“We have seen a pattern. Whenever police are diverted for VIP security, demolition drives by civic bodies and bandobast for rallies and other events, chain snatchers strike. During these deployments, police stations and the crime branch experience an acute shortage of personnel.”

Statistics reveal that until May 29 this year, there were 220 chain snatching incidents as compared to 217 during the same period in 2012. This year saw a rise in numbers, but the number of cases solved also went up from 21 in 2012 to 62 during the said time period.

Solunke added that Pune police had chalked out a plan to thwart chain snatching and 111 sensitive areas were identified along with 103 important patrolling patches. “The four deputy commissioners of police identified these areas after observation of the pattern.”

Recently,it was observed that chain snatchers strike at four-five places in the city within a small time span. Solunke added,“Some suspects are from outside Pune and we know they are also active in other cities and districts. There are groups of criminals from places like Shrirampur,Lonavala,Loni Kalbhor and even Goa who are active in Pune and other places. They come into the city and strike when there there police presence is low.” Pune police had also held meetings with counterparts from adjoining districts to share information.
