PUNEITES HAVE voted by a majority for a bright design containing blue and green colours and gulmohar leaves for the new fleet of Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) buses that will be launched early next year.

PMPML is procuring 1,200 new buses for the BRTS corridors in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad. It is also starting a feeder bus service on these corridors.

To increase the citizen involvement in the decision-making process, the PMPML had shortlisted three designs for the buses’ exteriors and put them out for voting by the citizens who could call up respective numbers to convey their choice.

The PMPML request evoked a good response from the citizens, with the toll-free numbers receiving more than 15,000 ‘missed calls’ in two weeks. “By a majority, the voters chose the blue and green design with gulmohar flowers by giving it more than half of the total votes. Other options such as flying birds and rainbows proved less popular with the citizens,” said D P More, the managing director of PMPML.

These buses with the new exterior designs are expected to begin plying by February next year.
