City-based Ecosan Services Foundation, working for sustainable sanitation and water management, will be holding a 32-km cycle rally from the city to Garade village on Khed-Shivapur Road in Pune district on Sunday as part of the initiative to promote dry sanitation among villagers.
As part of the Guts for Change Initiative project along with German Toilet Organisation, the foundation has decided to construct urine diversion dehydration toilets since water scarcity and lack of toilets facility are major issues in this hamlet resulting in open defecation.
The village has 70 per cent of households with no access to toilets. The toilets would be constructed using funds obtained from the Guts for Change Initiative, said Varad Shende of the foundation. The toilets would be constructed in October this year when the members of Guts for Change reach the city.
He said the initiative has already taken to a cycle rally from Berlin to Pune and the foundation would take up its rally from Pune to Garade village to create awareness for the construction of environment-friendly toilets. There will be a tree plantation drive, which will be conducted in the village on June 5,along with an art competition for school children on environmental issues,Shende added.
