The city police on Sunday arrested five persons in connection with the betting racket operating during the final match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) from a hotel in Pimpri Camp. Police,however,said that two bookies who were placing bets were still at large.
According to police,based on a tip-off,a raid was conducted at a hotel in Pimpri Camp around 10.30 pm and five persons were arrested along with Rs 2.39 lakh in cash,19 cellphones,a computer and some papers on which bets were taken.
Police have identified the suspects as Anil Pherwani,Sunny Mangalani,Pradeep Talreja,Kishor Paptani and Dinesh Sharma. Police said the suspects were receiving bets on their cellphones during the final match of the IPL on Sunday night. Deputy commissioner of police (Zone III) Shahaji Umap who led the raid said,Two bookies Ram Bajaj and Kaka are still at large. We have launched a search to nab them.
Umap added,We expect names of some more bookies and operators to be revealed. We have the papers and documents which were used to place bets. We are also finding out whether the hotel owner had any role to play.
