The Bombay Engineer Group (BEG) and Centre will soon get an indoor stadium for games such as basketball,handball and volleyball. The Commandant of BEG and Centre,Brig Anurag Bhasin,said two per cent of the construction of the indoor stadium is complete and the work is expected to be completed by 2015.
The purpose of the stadium is to provide upgraded sports facilities to the sportsmen who take training at this regimental centre of the Bombay Sappers of the Indian Army.
Bhasin was interacting with reporters in the backdrop of a visit to BEG and centre facilities at Khadki.
The purpose (of the stadium) is to upgrade sports facilities to match the requirements of the sportsmen, Bhasin said. The stadium will also have a visitor lounge and a gym, he added.
The tender for the stadium was floated in 2011,but the work actually began two months ago and the cost of the project is estimated at Rs 8 crore.
BEG and Centre is the regimental centre of one of the Indian Armys Corps of Engineers,the other two being the Bengal Sappers and Madras Sappers,and is the node for training of triathlon.
The centre has so far produced a number of talented sportsmen such as Naib Subedar K Ravi Kumar one of the members of the Armys weightlifting team who won a gold medal in CWG 2010 in Delhi and represented the country in London Olympics 2012.
I am now training for the next Commonwealth games, Subedar Ravi Kumar said.
