The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) may have initiated action to remove flex banners of political leaders and parties from public places across the city with the election code of conduct coming into place, but it is yet to remove photographs of political leaders in the cabins allotted to office-bearers in the civic headquarters. A large number of citizens visit these offices often.

“Banners are being removed as per the election code of conduct,” said K C Karkar,in-charge of implementation of the code for PMC polls. On the photographs of political leaders and party symbols in the civic offices allotted to office bearers,he said,“We have not received any complaint about it. Action should be initiated if a No-Objection Certificate has not been issued by the sky sign department of the PMC.”

Ramesh Shelar,in-charge of the anti-encroachment and sky sign departments said,“We have removed around 10,000 flex banners in the last two days. I am not aware of extending action at civic headquarters. We never gave permission for putting up photographs of political party leaders in civic offices. The responsibility lies with the department concerned,” he said.

Municipal secretary Sunil Parkhi said his department had allotted offices to all office bearers in PMC headquarters but didn’t give permission to put up photos of political leaders and party symbols in offices. “As the election code is in force, they should be removed. We will take action as offices are part of the civic property,” he said.

The PMC allots offices to the mayor, deputy mayor, chairpersons of the standing committee, city improvement committee, legal committee, women and child welfare committee, the leader of the house, leader of opposition, and leaders of the NCP,Congress,BJP,Shiv Sena and the MNS. All the offices have portraits of political leaders and some have party symbols on walls.

Vivek Velankar of Sajag Nagrik Manch said,“The PMC should initiate action suo motu,” he added.
