A day after a manager with an IT firm was conned by being handed over a soap cake and a stone tile instead of a phone and a laptop, another IT professional from Magarpatta was allegedly tricked by two persons similarly. Police say an organised gang may be behind the crimes, and the conmen use tricks to divert the attention of victims.
In the latest incident, the victim,Nisarg Shailesh Joshi,a 22-year-old software professional, was out of his office for a tea break at 3.30 pm when two unidentified persons approached him near Magarpatta Tower No 12,the police said. The duo pretended to know him and started talking to him.
Sub-inspector S R Mane said,The two told Nisarg that they needed money and wanted to sell a laptop and a cellphone for Rs 50,000. Nisarg believed them, went to an ATM and withdrew Rs 50,000.
It is unclear how the two could gain the victims trust. The suspects handed over a bag to him and left, taking the cash and Nisargs cellphone worth Rs 10,000 with them. When he opened the bag,he found a stone slab,a soap bar instead of a cellphone and two boxes with chargers, Mane said.
Based on Nisargs description,we will prepare sketches of the two and find out if this case has any links to three cases in the past, Mane added.
