Residents in Ajmera-Masulkar Colony area stunned as youngsters from well-to-do families are caught for dacoity

It was a scene straight out of a Bollywood flick: one man taking on the might of 11 attackers and in the end emerging triumphant. Thirty-year-old Ganesh Sambherao, manager with a gas agency located in Bhosari,single-handedly fought off the challenge from 11 motorcycle-borne youths who had come to loot the Rs 8 lakh cash that he was carrying. Though the youths,in the age group of 20 to 25 years, attacked him and looted cash after resisting his attempts to prevent them from doing so,they were caught by the police barely an hour later. The cash was also recovered from them.

Around 7.30 pm on last Wednesday,Sambherao was returning home in his car from his office,Gujar Gas Enterprises, located at Landewadi area of Bhosari MIDC. One of the motorcyclists blocked his way. As Sambherao braked to a halt, other youngsters drove close to his car, alighted and tried to pull him out of the car. As Sambherao stumbled out of the car,he wrestled with attackers who punched in the face several times and repeatedly kicked him in the stomach. Refusing to give up despite blood oozing from the injury on the face,Sambherao caught three of the attackers in his arms. He held on to them even as other desperadoes tried to beat him with rods.

“One of the attackers brutally hit me on the hand which allowed two of the attackers to escape. But third one was caught by me soon after he escaped. Three of my colleagues,D Vidhate,Pramod Kamble and Rajesh Thapa, also joined in and we didn’t let the third attacker escape even as others had fled with the leather bag carrying Rs eight lakh in cash,” says the young manager.

Even as the fight was going on,Ganesh had alerted the Bhosari police from his cellphone. The Bhosari police, led by inspector Mohan Vidhate, landed on the scene and took the lone attacker in custody. Initially, the attacker refused to speak, but after the police wielded the baton,he spilled the beans. In one hour, the police then caught seven others from the upmarket Ajmera-Masulkar Colony. All the attackers have been charged with dacoity and have been remanded to police custody. Three of them are yet to be caught. “It was because my son is a mentally and physically a strong person,he could emerge unscathed from the brutal attack..,” says Bhimaji Sambherao, with smile writ large on his face. “Thankfully,my son caught one of the attackers. Had they fled,my son would have been blamed for the dacoity.”

For his bravery,Ganesh Sambherao has been honoured by the city police commissionerate. He was felicitated on Friday by the Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh who presented him with a certificate that reads: The Commissioner of Police,Pune, records his appreciation of the good work done by Shri Ganesh B Sambherao,a resident of Kasarwadi, for helping police in nabbing the accused…”

Meanwhile, families of the youths who have been caught are in a state of shock. It has been a nightmare for parents who have neither slept nor taken food since their children’s arrest. Five to six youngsters who hail from well-to-do families are reportedly first time offendors. One of them who is an engineer is said to be son of a teacher. Masulkar Colony corporator Rajesh Pillay said,”The incident has shocked the families of the youths no end. Three of the attackers are history-sheeters,they might have misled these youths. I can’t believe these youths have committed such an act.” Congress corporator Babu Nair said,”It seems youngsters from Ajmera-Masulkar Colony are going in the wrong direction. It had a very good reputation as one of the best residential complexes. It is time the colony people come together to keep this image in tact. We should engage these youths in constructive work in the colony.” The Sambherao family says it has no malice against the attackers. “But we will let the law takes its own course,” say both father and son. ACP P Patil said it was well-planned dacoity attack. “The attackers had carried out a survey for two-three days before striking..”
