A 72-year-old woman was on Monday found murdered at her residence on Kumthekar Road in Sadashiv Peth area.
Police have identified the victim as Asha Narayan Lagad,who was staying alone at the first floor apartment of Laxmi Nivas building,which she owns,near Phadatre chowk on Kumthekar road.
Preliminary investigation revealed that she was strangulated and the motive was robbery. Gold ornaments,weighing about 80 gram,and Rs 70,000 in cash had been stolen from the apartment.
Police said Lagad owned Laxmi Nivas building and had been staying alone at the first-floor apartment. The remaining two floors were rented out for a tailoring business.
She has two sons,one resides in Sadashiv Peth,while the other at Shaniwar Peth.
Police said she had gone to Alandi in the morning and returned around 4.30 pm. She had a tea at her house. After some time,a person in the building saw her lying unconscious on a bed in the house and informed her grandson who immediately reached the spot.
He called the doctor thinking she may have had a stroke. It was later found that some cash and gold ornaments were missing from the house and the police were informed.
Police reached the spot around 7 pm. Soon,senior police officials including deputy commissioner (Zone I) Makrand Ranade rushed to the spot to investigate. Police said Lagad was strangulated between 4.30 pm and 5.30 pm.
Police suspect that the murder was well planned and committed on Monday,because shops on Kumthekar Road remain closed on Mondays. Police expect clues to emerge from CCTV cameras installed in the area. An offence of murder has been registered at Vishrambag police station.
