A 25-year-old youth drowned in the Bhushi dam near Lonavala on Sunday. The police said the youth,Chetan Swamy, had gone to the dam with his friends and relatives for a picnic.

Swamy,a resident of Talegaon Tabhade, worked as a helper with a multinational company in Chakan, the police said.

Sub-inspector Gajanan Deshmukh of Lonalava town police said,“Swamy had come to the dam along with his four friends and two relatives. Those who could swim entered the waters around 11.30 am. Swamy could not swim. He had told his friends that he would only enter the shallow part of the reservoir.”

“Prima facie,it seems that Swamy could not judge the depth and drowned. The incident occurred around 1.30 pm. His body was fished out by residents about an hour later. As the reservoir is only half filled, there were no life guards,” Deshmukh said.

“His family hails from Mhow in Madhya Pradesh. They had moved to Pune a few years ago. His body has been handed over to his kin after the post mortem.” Deshmukh added.
