On a two-day visit to Amethi and Rae Bareli,Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi today listed development works that he would initiate in Amethi. He also promised to transform his constituency, along with Rae Bareli, into model constituencies of Uttar Pradesh in terms of development.

Addressing the public after laying the foundation stone for a post-office building in Shukul Bazaar in Amethi,he said,“I will change Amethi and Rae Bareli in such a way that people will come to see the development works here.” Establishment of a paper mill would bring employment for about 10,000 workers in Amethi,he added.

He said the UPA government was not able to undertake development work in Amethi and Rae Bareli at a fast pace because the Congress is not in government in Uttar Pradesh.

Among the works to be undertaken,Rahul announced that he would soon bring a food park with about 40 food processing units in Fursatganj,a paper mill by Hindustan Paper Corporation in Jagdishpur, establish a Central Institute of Hotel Management,Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition in Jagdishpur, which was recently cleared by the Central cabinet, and also a power plant in Jagdishpur.

Rahul said he had come to know that farmers from UP send their mangoes to Delhi, from where they are exported. He said he would create infrastructure so that the mangoes can be directly exported from UP.

On the Aadhaar card,he said,“This card will give every Indian an identity irrespective of caste, religion and economic status. Aadhaar card will ensure that the money meant for you under different schemes reaches your account directly.”

Later in the day at Jagdishpur, addressing Youth Congress workers from Amethi,Rae Bareli and Sultanpur,Rahul said they should start popularising UPA government schemes. “He told us that non-performers would be removed and those working hard would be given a chance to grow. He asked us to work collectively for Lok Sabha elections, keeping aside our differences,” said a Youth Congress worker.

After the Youth Congress meeting,Rahul interacted for about an hour with local farmers. The farmers, selected from across the constituency, each specialised in cultivation of a particular crop. “Farmers who have excelled in cultivation of potato, mango or are undertaking poultry farming were selected for interaction with him. He sat on the ground with the farmers and learned about techniques adopted by them to improve their crop. He also enquired about their problems,” said a party leader.

Later in the day,Rahul addressed sewa dal workers and interacted with women workers of self-help groups.

On Friday,Rahul will meet party workers and locals from Amethi and Rae Bareli at Bhuve Mau guest house in Rae Bareli before leaving for Delhi.
