THE POLICE on Monday arrested a Nigerian resident who was staying illegally in the city. This is the second case in less than 10 days that a foreign national was arrested for illegally staying in the country.
According to the police, the accused had been identified as Abel Kingsley Manuchimso, a resident of Nigeria. The accused, according to the police, had been staying without any valid documents and visa for the last one-and-a-half year.
The police officials said that Abel came to India in February 2011 on a student visa and he could stay in the country till February 2014. His visa was to be expired in February 2015 but the police officials said that Abel did not take visa extension and continued to stay in the country.
Abel was staying in a rented accommodation in Sector 20 when he was arrested. Sector 19 Station House Officer (SHO) Maninder Singh lodged the complaint against Abel. The SHO said that they came to know from the Foreigners Registration Office (FRO) about the expiry of Abel’s visa, following which they started tracing him but he kept shifting his locations.
The SHO said that they had informed all the agencies, including Intelligence Bureau, about the disappearance of Abel, following which he was traced to Sector 20.
Abel was booked under relevant sections of the Foreigners Act. This is the second instance in which a foreigner was arrested for staying illegally in the city within a span of 10 days. Earlier, the police arrested a Ukrainian resident.
